September, 2019

We have had a fantastic first month of 2nd grade!

Reading...We are story mapping and learning about sequencing, identifying the problem and the solution, as well as the characters and setting of a story. This upcoming month we break into our leveled reading groups that will focus on specific reading needs around fluency and comprehension.

Writing...We are learning how to craft a personal narrative with a well-developed beginning, middle and end.

Spelling and Word Study...We are focusing on short and long vowel sounds, as well as vowel teams that make long vowel sounds.

Math...We are making combinations to 10 and 20 which helps us with our foundational math facts. We are also learning about even and odd numbers, telling time to the hour and half hour, as well as skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s with the help of a 100s chart.

Science and Social Studies... We have launched into our Monarch Butterfly Project Based Learning Unit that focuses on the threats to this endangered species. Students design ways to help save the butterfly. We incorporate mapping and geography skills into this unit
